November 2005
Hurst Romans began around 2 years ago when
about 8 lads had some "kick abouts" in the
Hurst village cubs pack evenings. The club
slowly grew and began playing 7 a-side games
against other packs.
Training sessions began on weekends and more
boys from the village turned up and sat on
the fence of the school field watching.
Gradually more lads began to train and a few
fathers came along to help and put more
interesting sessions together.
We then set up a committee and began regular
meetings, entered 6 a-side summer
tournaments and eventually leagues. Nike kit
was purchased and the club had a badge
designed.
We now have boys from the age of 6 up to 14
playing in the Hicks Development League, the
East Berks Junior League and the Woodley &
Earley District League. There are around 130
boys registered with us, we are affiliated
to the Berks & Bucks FA and three of our
managers, including myself, are now proud
owners of Level 1 FA Coaching Certificates.
We would still like to get a girls team
together so we would qualify for the
SportsMatch donation. The aim would be for
the club to return to where the original
Hurst FC used to play near the Green Man pub
in the village, and re-build a new club
house and have a proper "home" pitch.
